Denpasar, Bali
Denpasar has a fascinating history. It was known as Badung and was once the capital of the Hindu Kingdom of Majapahit. In 1906 it was attacked by the Dutch and a thousand Balinese including the king committed mass suicide rather than surrender to them.
Today, Denpasar is the capital of Bali and the main hub to visit other places and islands around Bali.
Shark Island
Shark Island is actually a pontoon (an artificial floating raft) some distance from of Serangan Island. This is a private initiative of surfer Paul Friese from Honolulu to save the endangered Reef Sharks. The sharks are quite placid and well fed and swimming with them presents no danger. On Serangan Island itself, there’s a Turtle Conservation and Education Centre which is also worth a visit.
Sakenen Temple
Sakenen Temple is also located on Serangan Island and the locals refer to it as ‘Pura Sakenan’. This thousand year temple was originally made with coral rocks and limestone but has now undergone renovation and only the outer wall retains its original form. Thousands of devotees used to visit it for the annual celebration during low tide but it is easier now as the island is connected to the mainland by road.
The Bali Provincial Public Museum
This is located next to the mayor’s office, east of Puputan Square. It showcases over 10,000 exhibits and the structure hosting the exhibits itself is a prime example of the amazing Balinese architecture. The square next to it was the site of the Badung war of 1906 when the Dutch invaded.
Denpasar Arts Center, East Denpasar
This arts center is the main site for the annual Bali Arts Festival which is held from July to August. Ardhacandra amphitheatre is another venue here that regularly holds concerts and events. Next door is the Denpasar Institute of Arts and you are welcome to peek at students perfecting their traditional dance routines.
Some other places of interest are the Finger Painting Museum
A member of the royal family and a noted Indonesian artist exhibits his works here, all done with paint applied just by fingers.
Ngurah Rai Mangrove Forest A peaceful oasis to escape the crowds; with well laid out tracks and shelters with benches where you can sit and rest.
Desa Budaya Kertalangu Cultural Village
A large village that features green paddy fields, spas, activity centers, restaurants, Balinese dancing lessons and much more.
